Congratulations

On behalf of the Canadian Foundation for Women's Health, I would like to thank all those who have taken part in this year's grants competition, especially the many dedicated reviewers who assisted the Foundation.  Each year, the Canadian Foundation for Women’s Health is pleased to present grants to promote new Canadian research. The Foundation is glad to say that this has been a record year for applications and we received double the amount of previous years.

Without further ado, the 2009 research grant recipients.

Alva Foundation GRANT in Neonatal and Newborn Health
Dr. Denis Crankshaw from McMaster University for his work on “The extracellular calcium-sensing receptor as a new target for the delay of preterm labour”

CFWH General Research Grant
Dr. Lisa Hornberger and Dr. Consolato Sergi from the University of Alberta for their research on “Digital Three Dimensional Reconstruction of the Early Fetal Heart”

The Duchesnay International Elective Fellowship for Obstetrics and Gyneacology Residents
Dr. Amanda Morris from the University of Manitoba to pursue an elective in Kenya

It is with great pleasure that we award these grants for women's health research. The Foundation looks forward to distributing additional grants in the next competition.

The Cause

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide after breast cancer, and in developing countries, the leading cause of death by cancer. In 2007, an estimated 1,300 new cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed in Canada. There were approximately 400 deaths from cervical cancer.

One woman in 70 over the age of 45 in Canada will develop ovarian cancer. In 2007, there were 2600 new ovarian cancer cases, 1750 (more than half) of the women diagnosed died. Most experts agree with more research dollars early detection would be realized by now. Research funding in Canada for these types of cancers is not in proportion to the number of lives it affects. (Canadian Cancer Society)

Approximately 4100 new Uterine Cancer cases are diagnosed yearly resulting in 740 deaths in Canada
