Research Grants

The benefits, both short and long-term, of research into health are well recognized. Since the early 1900s, women's longevity in North America has doubled from 39 years to 81 years as a result of, among other things, advances made through health research. Only with the continued support of institutions and individuals interested in women's health research will further advancements be made.

The Canadian Foundation for Women's Health holds an annual research grant competition for researchers conducting studies on any aspect of women's health. The mission of the Foundation is to save lives and improve the health of women – supporting the groundbreaking research being conducted in Canada is one of the ways the Foundation is making this goal a reality.

Each year, a call for proposals goes out to medical researchers working in the field of women’s health.  These proposals then undergo a blind peer review process to ensure that the most outstanding projects are funded. The successful research projects are recognized at a special ceremony during the Annual Clinical Meeting of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada.

Important research studies were supported last year in:

  • postpartum depression
  • ovarian cancer
  • breast cancer
  • the menstrual cycle
  • family care-giving at the end of life
  • safety issues in preterm labor
  • long-term effects of fetal and neonatal exposure to cigarette smoke.
